LANSING – State Representative Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga) today co-sponsored a House resolution that declares September 2007 as College Savings Month in Michigan.
"Proving our students with access to higher education is a top priority," Byrum said. "As we work to move Michigan forward, we must create the best-educated workforce possible in order to draw new and emerging industries to our state. It is imperative that our children have access to the necessary tools to help them compete for the 21st century jobs of the future. I'm proud to co-sponsor this resolution and continue the tradition of putting education first."
Byrum said the Michigan Education Trust, a prepaid college tuition plan that has been named one of the top college savings programs in the nation, was provided by the state of Michigan as a Section 529 Qualified Tuition Plan, which was passed by our state's legislature in the 1980s.
"The students of today are the workers of tomorrow, and a higher education will give them the skills to ensure a bright future for them and for Michigan," Byrum said. "Urging parents to save for their kids' college tuition is a great start."
