LANSING – Pointing to the announced closure of a local laser welding plant, State Representative Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga) today stressed the importance of investing in competitive-edge technologies such as renewable energy and life science in order to create jobs and get Michigan's economy back on track.
"Our economy is at a crossroads," Byrum said. "Our manufacturing sector is feeling global pressure like never before. If we want to be a leader in the global economy, it is absolutely vital that we invest in economic development programs like the 21st Century Jobs Fund and diversify our economy."
According to an article in the Nov. 8 online edition of the Lansing State Journal, the Troy-based Noble International Inc. will close its laser welding operation plant in Holt in the second quarter of 2008. The closure means that 50 local workers will lose their jobs.
Byrum said that Michigan can turn its economy around through programs such as the 21st Century Jobs Fund, which encourages the development and commercialization of competitive-edge industries such as life sciences; renewable energy; advanced automotive, manufacturing and materials; and homeland security and defense.
Byrum added that any laid off worker looking for information on unemployment assistance could contact her office by calling (517) 373-0587.
"Our working men and women built this state," Byrum said. "In these times of corporate downsizing and outsourcing, we need to stand by them. Michigan has the best workers in the nation, and we must do everything in our power to protect the families and workers that drive our economy forward."
