Byrum to Host Town Hall on Child Safety Issues, MIChild

Rep. will sign families up for MIChild insurance, hand out booster seats

State Representative Barb Byrum and her friend Isabella pose for a picture on Bring A Child to Work Day, April 26, 2007.

LANSING – State Representative Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga) will hold a town hall meeting on Monday, May 19 to share information about child safety issues and help families sign up for MIChild, an important state initiative that provides health care for uninsured children of Michigan's working families. Byrum also will have individuals conducting car seat checks and providing free booster seats at the town hall.

The town hall will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19 at FaithUnitedMethodistChurch, 4301 S. Waverly Road, Lansing.

"Our future depends on the health, safety and education of our children," Byrum said. "Since coming to the Legislature, I have fought to ensure that our children have access to the education and the health care that they need. No child should have to go without health care, and if we can sign up just one family for MIChild at this town hall, it will be a great success."

The monthly premium for MIChild, which does not have co-pays or deductibles, is $10 per family. The initiative covers a wide range of medical services, from dental care to hospital visits, and from immunizations to mental health support.

Children are eligible if they are under the age of 1 and belong to a family of four whose income is between $38,208 and $41,304; or if they are between 1 and 18 and belong to a family of four that has an income between $30,984 and $41,304. Children may still qualify for MIChild health insurance based on other family circumstances. For additional information, call toll-free (888) 988-6300.

"The issue of health care is something that affects everyone in our community," Byrum said. "Strong communities attract business investments to Michigan, which creates jobs for our residents. By providing health care to the uninsured children of our working families, we are ensuring that our community continues to be a great place to live, work and raise a family."
