Local businesses are the largest employer in our community. Small businesses account for over 98 percent of Michigan employers.

In this ever-expanding global market, we must remember to support our local shop owners and small businesses.

The food is fresher; the stores are closer; and they probably know you by name. You can save money and use less gas because you don't have to drive as far to buy the items you need.

Help keep our communities thriving by buying local!

Hello, I'm State Representative Barb Byrum

Sadly, one in 10 children is at risk from undiagnosed eye and vision problems, and only 14 percent of children from infancy to age six have had a comprehensive eye assessment.

These problems can be devastating for a child and are 100% preventable.

That's why the Michigan Optometric Association has organized the InfantSee program which gives free screenings to infants who are between the ages of 6 and 12 months old.

These screenings are completely free, regardless of a family's ability to pay.

To find one of the 304 Michigan InfantSee doctors, call toll-free at 888-396-EYES (3937).

Take this one little step to keep our children safe and healthy. Hello, I am State Representative Barb Byrum

Hello, I'm State Representative Barb Byrum. Instilling the love of reading in our children while they're young will pave the way to their academic success. The best way to do that is read to them. When you read to your children, you help them become lifelong learners. Take a 30-minute break from your day. Sit down and read to your child. Through books, you and your child can explore the world together - without even leaving your living room. Celebrate "March is Reading Month" with your kids and start a new family tradition of reading together.

This is State Representative Barb Byrum and I know that a college education is essential for the good paying jobs of the future. All students should have the opportunity to further their education. That is why I am proud to offer a scholarship to students in our community.

I am offering two $500 scholarships to local high students who plan to pursue a college degree or training in a trade. All high school seniors who live in House District 67 are eligible to apply and should submit an essay of up to 750 words describing their favorite book or the book that has had the largest impact on their life.

Essays must be received by 5 p.m. on April 11. The winners will be chosen by a panel of local community leaders. If you have any questions call me at 517-373-0587 or visit my website at www.byrum.housedems.com. Thank you.

Hello, I'm State Representative Barb Byrum and I represent the 65th District of the Michigan House.

I'm here today to demand that the GOP-led Senate take up the House legislation to repeal the absolute immunity from accountability enjoyed by billion-dollar drug companies in Michigan.

The House passed legislation to end drug immunity on February 22, 2007 -- more than a year ago.

Thanks to Senate inaction, the victims of dangerous drugs are still waiting to have a voice in Michigan.

Well, we're tired of waiting.

We want other people who are tired of waiting to sign our online petition at www.housedems.com/endrximmunity and urge the Senate to act immediately to repeal drug immunity.

We will make our voices heard on this issue!

I'm very excited. The Governor called for full day kindergarten and that is what we need to do to make sure our students are prepared to work those high-tech jobs of the 21st century, by making sure our kids have full day kindergarten, by making sure our children are not permitted to just drop out of school at age 16, but rather have compulsory attendance until the age 18, and go on to college or technical training. This is what our state needs. Our state needs educated, young people to work those high-tech jobs.
